How to Get Rid of Wrinkles and Invite In Healthy Glowing Skin

Happen to notice folds in your skin? Better known as wrinkles, the formal name for these unwanted lines and sags is rhytides. As you age, your skin produces less collagen and elastin, which are proteins that make your skin thinner and less resistant to damage. Environmental exposure, dehydration and toxins can all make your face more wrinkle-prone, leaving you to wonder what helps with wrinkles.

That said, wrinkles are a natural part of aging, and there’s no reason to dread them. But if you’d like to stay looking young (and who can blame you?), there are ways to slow the aging process.

Slow It Down..

Wear Sunscreen Daily

Seeking a wrinkles face treatment? Start with SPF. It really is that simple. Most people know that wearing sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) over 30 can help prevent skin cancer. A 2013 study in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that sunscreen also helped delay the signs of aging. 

The good news is sunscreen has come a long way since the white cast you adorned in your childhood family scrapbooks. The suncare category has expanded vastly in just the last few years alone—in some cases, even to a luxury level. Many sunscreens now contain other skincare benefits, too. Quit Smoking

File this under duh, but it’s important we reinforce the following: Not only is smoking bad for your general health, it can also age your face prematurely. One fascinating study compared the faces of 79 pairs of identical twins in which one smoked regularly and one didn’t. The striking differences in their appearance made it clear that smoking affects the condition of the skin on your face.

Watch What You Eat

They say the food you put in your body is like the fuel you put in your car—and they’re not wrong. Notice how sluggish you feel after a delicious yet daunting plate of dessert, or a heavy, processed meal? Well, your skin gets the wrath of that as well. 

Sugar in your body sets off a process called glycation, and Advanced Glycation End products (called AGEs) are proven to be harmful for your skin. AGEs break down the collagen in your body and, over time, can make you look older. AGEs have also been linked to food preparation methods such as grilling and frying (as opposed to baking and boiling). Limiting your intake of sugar and oil-rich foods will help your face retain its youthful luminosity and shape.

Introduce Retinoids

Retinoids are what you didn’t know you needed, but don’t know how you’ve lived without.  These Vitamin A-derived chemicals help reduce lines and wrinkles in your skin and improve its texture, pigment and hydration levels.

Consider Micro-Needling

Micro-needling, or skin needling, is a minimally invasive facial rejuvenation procedure that uses a device with several tiny needles that poke you to create a miniature wound (yes, we know that sounds weird) in your epidermis, your skin’s top layer. The wound heals within minutes and causes new collagen and elastin to form as your skin heals. It’s quite a phenomenon, really! It’s considered one of the more effective facial wrinkle treatments.

Switch Your Sleeping Position

We’re creatures of habit, so this may be a toughie. But did you know some wrinkling on your face can actually be caused by the position that you sleep in? It’s called “compression,” and it’s caused by your face pressing against the pillow the same way every night. Over time, this compression leaves your skin weaker in some places than others, and a wrinkle forms. You can prevent or slow down compression wrinkles by sleeping on your back.

 Clean Your Face Daily

There are many reasons to wash your face every day—I mean that’s like skincare 101. But in case you need a refresher, leaving makeup on your face overnight causes your skin to absorb most of it, which can clog pores and strip moisture. Protect From UV Light

UV rays (aka light emitted from the sun) are a double-edged sword. Ultraviolet light is the ultimate cause of most wrinkles on your face, neck, arms and hands. 

While ultraviolet light can’t be completely avoided (unless you lock yourself away in a dungeon, of course), there are steps to lessening the degree of exposure you receive. For starters, opt for sunless tanning lotion or spray over long sunbathing sessions in the sand. Also, wear a hat that shields your face from the sun during long periods outdoors. When possible, wear longer pants and long-sleeved shirts when you’re outside. You’ll still absorb some sun, but it won’t contribute to the wrinkles on your skin.

Adopt Healthier Habits

While we’ve gone over the biggies, there are also some little things you can do to keep wrinkles at bay. Some of these you wouldn’t normally think twice about, but when practiced repeatedly, they can actually lead to those pesky lines on your face. 

For example, drinking through a straw, chewing gum, blowing bubbles and smoking can lead to wrinkles around the mouth. Squinting, on the other hand, can lead to wrinkles around the eyes, which is why sunglasses in bright weather are strongly advised.

Get Glowing Skin

Much like death and taxes, wrinkles are inevitable. That said, it’s never too early (or late!) to implement a treatment for wrinkles on the face to delay their onset or halt their intensity. 

Depending on genetics, lifestyle and your skincare routine, you may have noticed fine lines (especially around the eyes) as recently as when you graduated college. We blink 10,000 times a day, so naturally, wrinkles in that area may start to arise. 

If avoiding wrinkles is a priority for you, the earlier you start preventative action, the better. That means applying sun protection, exfoliating and moisturizing. Youthful skin or mature, it’s never too late to get up and glow!
